January 2017

Happy New Year!

A huge thank you goes out to my dedicated and loyal clients that book multiple trips annually, we look forward to getting you out on the water starting mid April 2017. The early migration of big striped bass typically hits the area around the first week of May, some very big bass pass through on the early bunker schools. Last May provided good to excellent fishing to stripers up to 30lbs. in and around Milford to Norwalk zone, with all the bait we have been seeing it should only improve, and hopefully last into the summer! We are all keeping our fingers crossed for a solid showing of sandeels, it has been 5 years since we had fish sipping this important bait source near our sandy beaches...we are due!!

For those interested in winter river fishing for striped bass contact Captain Ian Devlin at 203-451-9400! Ian is dialed into the fishery and can get you into fly rod and light tackle action all winter on his custom flats boat. Give him a shout as he is guiding on the Housy full time until ice gets in the way!

With over 35 years experience Captain Chris Elser specializes in connecting anglers with big striped bass whether you prefer casting large herring and bunker flies, drift live eels or live line adult menhaden! This is an addictive pursuit and our success rate on stripers over 30lbs. is second to none in the Western Long Island Sound with fish up to 58 lbs. locally in the past several seasons. But, if you want to get more adventurous the Captain is also dialed into the Block Island fishery in which many stripers well over 60lbs. have been landed – rest assured that Captain Chris Elser will give you the best shot at a fish of a lifetime and you are certain to enjoy the hunt!

This one below was released quickly and measured 54" with a girth of 33" which according to the IGFA formula puts this fish at over 70lbs., and what makes this fish extra special is that it was caught in local CT waters in less than 10 feet of water!

The 62.5 lb. striped bass above was weighed in at the Block Island Boat Basin and caught by Heather Elser in less than 20 feet of water. Should have made it official as it could have been a women's world record!

Shore Guiding and Kayak trips are also available and I highly recommend Peter Viviano for either if you are a fly fisherman - you can check out his info at Fishflyes.com! Pete is a classic fly fisherman and accomplished caster who is able to adapt to any current situation the western sound has to offer from the surf. If you are interested in obtaining a wealth of knowledge about the ecology of the western sound as well as catching striped bass on the fly Pete is a go to guide. His custom flies are amazing to look at but more importantly they catch fish! I personally fish his bunker and herring yak patterns exclusively when targeting big fish on the fly. In July of 2010 I caught my personal best fly rod striper on one of Pete's spun deer hair eel patterns, that epic fish measured 48 inches and weighed over 40 lbs.

Trout Fishing can be experienced at it's finest with world class trout fishing right here in CT! Contact Derrick Kirkpatrick who specializes in targeting trophy trout on the Farmington River - check out his info at CTfishguides.com. There are very few anglers tuned into the Farmington River trout fishery like Derrick, he will ensure you come away with a valuable lesson!
